Lalibela Restaurant and Bar (Provided by Ethiopian Yellow Pages) in Columbus, Ohio is a full-service, authentic Ethiopian restaurant serving a reasonably-priced breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. Our clean, vibrant, well-managed restaurant is warm and inviting.

Guests are treated to traditional Ethiopian cuisine. The restaurant also boasts a full bar and billiards room.

Lalibela is located on the east side of Columbus, Ohio in the community of Whitehall. The restaurant’s physical address is 1111 S. Hamilton Ave., where we share the property with the Lalibela grocery and bakery.

Guests of all nationalities are invited to join us for a delicious meal, and to experiment with authentic Ethiopian food.

Ethiopian cuisine characteristically consist of spicy vegetable and meat dishes, usually in the form of wat (or wot), a thick stew, served atop Injera a large sourdough flat bread. Injera bread is about 50 centimeters (20 inches) in diameter and made out of fermented Teff flour, a grain native to Ethiopia. Ethiopians eat with their right hands, using pieces of Injera to pick up bites of entrees and side dishes.

Ethiopian food mostly consists of fish, chicken, beef and lamb, The Ethiopian Orthodox Church prescribes a number of Fasting periods, including Wednesdays, Fridays, and the entire Lenten season, so Ethiopian cuisine contains many dishes that are Vegan. This has also led Ethiopian cooks to develop a rich array of cooking oil sources: besides sesame and safflower, Ethiopian cuisine also uses nug (also spelled noog, known also as niger seed).

Ethiopia is the only country in Africa to have never been colonized, so it has kept its language, culture and heritage intact. Ethiopia is a landlocked country located in the Horn of Africa. It is the second-most populous nation in Africa, with over 82 million people. The capital is Addis Ababa. Ethiopia is also one of the oldest sites of human existence known to scientists today, having yielded some of humanity’s oldest artifacts.

Ethiopia has its own ancient calendar. The Ethiopian Calendar has more in common with the Coptic Egyptian Calendar. The Ethiopic and Coptic calendars have 13 months, 12 of 30 days each and an intercalary month at the end of the year of 5 or 6 days depending on whether the year is a leap year or not. The Ethiopian Calendar year to date is 7 years behind America’s calendar, while it is the year 2011 in America it is the year 2004 in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has it own alphabet called Gee’z, The Semitic languages of Ethiopia are related to both Hebrew and Arabic. Ethiopia’s national language is called Amharic.
